Biodiversity supremacist

“Cells,” textbooks pompously declare, “are the building blocks of life.”

Cells
HOWEVER
contrary to whatever may been assumed
is
NOT
the functional unit of life.

Take that cell out of the body
if it doesn’t
burst
it’s gonna shrivel.

That obscure biochemical
DNA or protein or wachamacallit
how useful or intriguing
is
NOT
the functional unit of life.

Take it out of the organism
and even if it doesn’t get denatured
by heat
UV
or whatever
it’s still dead.

Study it all you like.
But don’t forget.

The ORGANISM
the INDIVIDUAL
that PLANT or ANIMAL (not just humans, you biomedical bozo)
is the FUNCTIONAL unit of life.

That’s the thing that
stays alive
needs food
needs water
needs air
mates
stays alive (did I just say that twice?)
interacts with the environment and with each other
and with us.
And we are one of them.

Without appreciating
Ecology
Organismal biology
You can never claim to be biology students.

Now,
National curriculum planners:
Suck that up.

***

Without the plants
and the animals
and them interacting with each other,

Even if you have the most energy efficient buildings
The cleanest transport
The least wasteful production of goods and services,

Air and water will still deteriorate
Droughts and floods will still worsen
Temperatures and sea levels will still rise.

Wake up, urban planners.

Whatever jargon you attach
the “Eco-” as the fancy prefix
the “-sustainability” as a fancy suffix,

True environmental management
Places the animals and plants
At the core of the plan.
